SSSA Division: Soil Mineralogy
Deep, Wide, and Alive: Expanding Our View of Soils in a Changing Environment
(Oral Session; Co-Sponsors: Pedology, Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics and Hydrology)
Organizers: Donald G. McGahan , Nina Bingham , Kimber Moreland , Rebecca Lybrand and Daniel R Hirmas
Soil science research extends to scales of inquiry that span space and time in order to capture the true complexity of soil. This interdisciplinary session aims to bring together scientists working in soil science, ecology, biogeochemistry, critical zone science, hydrology, geology, geography, and related fields to expand our disciplinary, spatial, and temporal view of soils.
New Developments in Soil Mineral Identification, Modeling, and Interpretation (Poster and 5 Minute Rapid Oral Session; Co-Sponsors: Pedology, Soil Chemistry)
Moderators: M. Scott Demyan and Daniel R Hirmas
In the past decade, new mineralogical methods have been developed. Because this progress has happened in disparate fields it has limited the application to these methods in soil mineralogical questions. The goal of this session is bringing together diverse research disciplines to highlight new applications and techniques for soil mineralogy. Contributions involving optical, electron, and atomic force microscopy, XRD, XRF, XANES, Nano-SIMS, reflectance spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, LIBS, TGA, surface area determination, miniaturization of instrumentation, reduction of analysis time and cost, and advances in sample preparation including thin section and grain mounting for soil mineralogy are welcome.
