Postdoctoral Scientist Position: Effects of Molecular Speciation on Reactive Transport of Arsenic in Mine Tailings Systems
We seek a postdoctoral scientist to join our research team focused on understanding the changes in arsenic molecular speciation throughout the weathering profile of sulfide-ore derived mine tailings as a function of climate across the western U.S. The project involves a combination of field work, laboratory experiments, synchrotron spectroscopy, and computational modeling. It is designed to obtain a predictive understanding of arsenic speciation change in the tailings weathering profile, and associated impacts on contaminant transport and bioavailability.
The NIH-NIEHS funded postdoc would join a team of environmental geochemistry and contaminant transport researchers (Jon Chorover and Mark Brusseau research groups) in the Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona. This project is one of five inter-related research projects associated with the Arizona Superfund Research Center focused on environmental exposures and human health impacts of mine tailings derived arsenic.
- Ph.D. in environmental geochemistry, soil chemistry, contaminant hydrology, environmental science, or related field.
- Prior experience conducting aqueous geochemical experiments.
- Familiarity with advanced instrumental methods for geochemical and mineralogical characterization.
- Experience with synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy methods.
- Prior experience employing reactive transport codes for quantifying mineral transformation reactions.
- Expertise in environmental fate and bioavailability of arsenic in geochemical media.
Duration: Position is available immediately for two years, with third year funding dependent on successful progress. Applications will be reviewed beginning March 1, 2021.
