Dear Colleagues,

Please watch our new science movie, made within the German -  Chilean “Critical Zone” project "Earthshape: Earth Surface Shaping by Biota”.

The Skin of the Earth: where Life meets Rocks

The movie shows how not only geological forces shape Earth's surface, but also biological processes. These two fundamentally different influences are being explored along the Chilean coastal mountains. There, a climate and vegetation gradient prevails: from the driest desert on Earth to a wet rainforest: The biological influences can be recognized by the simultaneous gradient in plant cover and -growth.

The movie was produced by Friedhelm von Blanckenburg at GFZ Potsdam within the framework of the German Research Foundation (DFG) priority program Earthshape - Earth Surface Shaping by Biota.

The movies are available in three languages and in a short and a long version on the Earthshape Youtube Playlist.

The movies are also available for download as citeable DOI-indexed open-access MP4 files, for talks or undergraduate teaching. Please cite the official reference when you use the movies.

Have fun and, maybe, share the film!

Funding: This movie was realized within the German National Science Foundation (DFG)- funded research network “EarthShape – Earth Surface Shaping by Biota” which is coordinated by Todd Ehlers (Universität Tübingen), and Friedhelm von Blanckenburg (GFZ Potsdam).
