Climate - Average annual temperature of 5 °C. Average annual rainfall is 813 mm Snowfall averages 1,524 mm per year. growing season averages about 100 days.

Soils - Iron River loam, Carbondale peat, and Tawas sand.

Vegetation  Iron River loam = northern hardwoods dominated by sugar maple, yellow birch, basswood, and hemlock.  The Carbondale peat = mixed lowland conifers, black spruce  and tamarack. Tawas sand = Jack and red pine, quaking aspen, and paper birch Most stands = second-growth and even-aged

Research - since 1947 management of 2nd  growth forests
