This project aims at a detailed multidisciplinary study of the initial phase of weathering to obtain a detailed picture of the processes occurring at the biosphere-hydrosphere-geosphere interface and to develop new geochemical tools to study weathering and soil formation processes. The results will be integrated in a numerical hydrological watershed model. The long-term goal is to improve our understanding of basic processes and improve our ability of up-scaling to larger watersheds and to forecast changes in the hydrology and element fluxes of whole watersheds with changing climate.

Boulder Creek drains 1160 km2 from the Continental Divide in the Front Range of Colorado to its confluence with South St. Vrain River, and spans elevations from 1480 to 4120 m (Fig 1). The upper half of the watershed is a mountainous landscape of crystalline rocks, while the lower half crosses the piedmont and is underlain by sedimentary rocks and lined with alluvial terraces. The project will focus on the mountain portion, carved in Precambrian (1.7 by) granodiorite and older biotite gneiss (Lovering & Goddard, 1950), where three distinct erosion regimes arise (Birkeland et al., 2003).

Long-term soil-ecosystem experiments (LTSEs) demonstrate how and why humanity is changing Earth's soil and ecosystems on time scales of decades.

The Calhoun LTSE in the Southern Carolina Piedmont, USA, was initiated in 1957 on old cotton fields by US Forest Service scientists, Drs. LJ Metz and CG Wells. The 16 Metz-Wells plots have been resampled with nearly all samples archived on eight occasions (1962, 1968, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1990, 1997, & 2005).

Clear Creek River Basin used a as a testbed for Digital Watershed is a tributary of the Iowa River draining 270 km area subjected to considerable anthropogenic influence. The watershed is scientific “hotspot” because it is located in a region with the highest erosion rate in the nation. In addition, the watershed includes wetlands, agricultural and urbanized catchments that allow inference on the different effects of human intervention on the natural landscape.

Guadeloupe is a volcanic island submitted to humid tropical climate. Geology is pyroclastics, basalts and andesites. Age of rocks ranges from modern to 3 Ma according to a South-North age (and elevation) gradient. A strong precipitation gradient occurs between the East Coast (exposed to trade winds) and the mch more drier West Coast. Max. precipitations are 10 m at the top of the volcanoe, La Soufrière. The Capesterre watershed is monitored automatically and two lysimeter systems are ued to monitor soil solution profiles in Capesterre and Bras David Watersheds.

During the 80´s about twenty sites were selected representing various biotopes all over Sweden, from southern deciduous woodland via coniferous forest to open mire, lake and alpine heath. Their sizes ranged from a few to well over one thousand hectares. The deposition of air pollutants, mainly sulphur and nitrogen, is greatest in the southwest. Therefore most of the sites were situated there. During the period 1982 till about 1994 these sites were monitored.

This group is dedicated to sharing data and methods pertaining to the incubation of boreal and arctic soils during the International Polar Year (and beyond). We have collectively developed a protocol for collecting and measuring the radiocarbon values of the CO2 respired from incubated samples. Our aim is to collect comparable data during the upcoming field seasons in order to study the sources of respiration, along with differences in soil carbon cycling, across a variety of northern sites.

The Kruger National Park was established northeastern South Africa in 1926, and covers 1,948,528 ha. Elevations range from 260 to 839 m above sea level, and mean annual rainfall varies from around 350 mm in the north to around 750 mm in the south. The rainfall regime is characterized by extended wet and dry periods, in which the rainfall is either higher than the long-term mean, or lower than the mean, for between 6 and 12 consecutive years. These extended wet and dry periods have marked effects on the occurrence of fires, mainly through their influence on grass fuel loads.

The Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory (LCZO) will be located in Northeastern Puerto Rico in the USFS Luquillo Experimental Forest and at the USGS WEBB site. Soil Moisture Sensor Calibration

Soil moisture is difficult to monitor accurately because of the heterogeneity of pore space, bulk density and the soil matrix. There are several types of commercial soil moisture probes available, including those that employ time domain reflectrometry and frequency domain reflectrometry. Calibration of these probes is difficult owing mainly to the difference between soil structures in field and laboratory conditions. The purpose of this group is to share calibration methods and data in order to improve the quality of soil moisture data.

The rain-snow transition zone is particularly vulnerable to large & rapid changes in climate & landcover. While this zone undergoes rapid seasonal changes, going from snowcoverto wet soil to dry soil over a 1-2 month period, climate warming will shift this transition period earlier or eliminate it entirely. The result will be major changes in seasonal-to-interannualcritical zone processes involving water, nutrients and ecosystem response of the largely mixed conifer forest found in the rain-snow transition zone.

The Strengbach catchment is an experimental forest monitored since 1986 for hydrological, geochemical and meteorological data. This 80ha surface area catchment is located in the Vosges massif with a temperate oceanic mountainous climate, on granitic bedrock. All reservoirs involved in the biogeochemical cycling are studied. Wet atmospheric depositions (rain, snow), dry atmospheric particles (aerosols), all stream and spring waters, groundwaters (piezometer), soil profiles, saprolite and bedrock, vegetation (roots, wood, bark, leaves, litter).

The Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory is a forested, small, temperate-climate catchment in central Pennsylvania in which the regolith is developing upon homogeneous shale. The purpose of the observatory and associated interdisciplinary research is to quantitatively predict the creation, evolution, and structure of regolith as a function of the geochemical, hydrologic, biologic, and geomorphologic processes operating in a temperate, forested landscape.
