On October 14-15, 2004, scientists representing the European community and UK met in London, England to discuss efforts to advance weathering systems science. The meetings were supported by the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), an international alliance of leading higher-education institutions committed to developing research collaborations in interdisciplinary areas of global significance.
European scientists gathered for a workshop on October 14, 2004, at the Natural History Museum in London; also present were a program manager from the National Science Foundation and a representative from the US weathering initiative. The group proposed a joint US-European initiative and authored a position paper that was sent to the European Commission a week later. Click here to view this paper.
UK scientists met the following day (October 15) to prepare a position paper on a national research strategy for weathering systems science research. This document was forwarded on 2nd February to the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a formal expression of interest for a NERC Community Meeting to plan a soils research strategy with a major weathering science component that could contribute significantly to weathering system efforts and link to the EU initiative on soils and weathering.
