As a network of people, CZEN promotes the goal of a network of observatories that could answer questions about Critical Zone processes.  Such a network could consist of data compiled at sites and published online or in the literature, as well as sites with ongoing research activity. To promote CZEN as a network of sites, NSF grants NSF EAR-0632516 and NSF EAR-0819857 provided approximately $10k each to seed sites within CZEN. In addition, one of these seed sites, the Susquehanna Shale Hills Observatory has joined Boulder Creek and the Southern Sierra to become NSF-funded Critical Zone Observatories (Boulder Creek CZO NSF-0724960 Southern Sierra CZO NSF-0725097 Shale Hills CZO NSF-0725019). These seed sites and CZOs as well as a few international sites that are funded by their own country organizations are shown below.
