Dear Colleague:
The Denitrification Research Coordination Network
(http://denitrification.org) is pleased to announce a workshop entitled
"Denitrification in Managed Ecosystems" to be held May 12-14, 2009, at the
University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, Narragansett, RI (nearest airport is
Providence, RI).
Denitrification is an important tool in managed ecosystems (e.g., artificial
wetlands, riparian buffers, wastewater treatment facilities or holding
ponds, etc.) designed to enhance removal of nitrogen or minimize export
(agricultural fields). Increased nitrogen inputs and subsequent export of
nitrogen are placing increasing pressure on sensitive ecosystems. An
improved understanding of how denitrification might be managed to reduce
these impacts is critical. Thus, there is much to be gained from an
exchange of knowledge between the communities of scientists and engineers
doing research on denitrification and those who are using the
denitrification process for practical applications. This workshop of 25-35
participants will bring these two groups together to catalyze and stimulate
interaction and an exchange of knowledge on denitrification. Participants
will be drawn from a range of academic institutions, government agencies,
and the private sector. Some specific anticipated outcomes of this workshop
include an assessment of knowledge on the effectiveness of various human
engineered systems (e.g., wetlands, riparian buffers, waste treatment
systems, etc.) to maintain denitrification capacity, new insights on ways to
increase/decrease denitrification in intensively managed systems; sharing of
knowledge on advances in methods to quantify denitrification.
The preliminary agenda for the workshop can be accessed at:

PDF version of agenda is at:

Application forms for attending the workshop can be downloaded from:
http://denitrification.org/Other/2009-DenitrificationWS-App.doc
The application period will be open until January 19, 2009. If applications
exceed the spaces available, selections will be made by mid-February and
notices will be sent out by the end of February.
Some funding is available for partial travel support, with priority given to
students and young scientists. The application form provides instructions
for requesting travel support.
Please forward this announcement to colleagues who may be interested.
Sincerely,
Workshop steering committee members:
