Nevada's Eco-Hydro-Climatic Observatories (NEHCO)

Moderated group

NEHCO is part of an NSF-EPSCoR grant awarded to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) for the 2008-2013 period. As stated in the original proposal, entitled "Nevada Infrastructure for Climate Change Science, Education, and Outreach", our vision is to create a statewide interdisciplinary program and virtual climate change center that will stimulate transformative research, education, and outreach on the effects of regional climate change on ecosystem resources (especially water) and support use of this knowledge by policy makers and stakeholders.
Among the infrastructure building components of the project, the Ecological Change and Water Resources groups will cooperate on the establishment and maintenance of two transects covering key parts of Nevada’s basin and range topography. These transects will be instrumented to measure key environmental and hydrometeorological variables, together with biological indicators of ecosystem responses to regional climate change. Data will be available to researchers, decision-makers, and the public via a newly developed data portal, to be developed as part of the Cyberinfrastructure component of the project.
