The mid-continent climate transition zone is ideally located to become the center node in a critical zone (CZ) observatory network. The Central Plains have well described and mostly unglaciated geology with subtle topography overlain with Mollisols. The relatively uniform geomorphic template of the Central Plains coupled with a steep regional rainfall gradient and a broad variety of land-use practices and associated land-cover types provides an excellent opportunity to study the effects of climate
